Bosnia - Farm Karanovac is a broiler breeder farm in Bosnia with 48,000 females across eight separate houses, generating approximately 8 million hatching eggs each year. Around 12 years ago, the farm transitioned from hand-collected nests to roll-away nests provided by Van Gent. This change enhanced both the quality of hatching eggs and the working conditions for staff. However, with a growing shortage of labor, the need for more automated egg collection became essential, prompting the company to prioritize this in its investment strategy.
The breeder farm is part of the Iradia Company located in Bosnia and Herzegovina. They began producing hatching eggs in 2004, allowing them to test their solutions on their own production, with noticeable results emerging each day. Their vision is to be recognized as a producer of hatching eggs known by it’s high quality and safe products.
Control over the quality of eggs
Biljana Tomić from Iradia Company explains: “We wanted to fully automate the collection of our eggs, but along the way we encountered several challenges. Karanovac farm, built in the 1970s, has houses about 20 metres apart and not in a straight line. In fact, the farm is divided into two clusters of houses separated by a road for supply trucks. Three houses are on one side of the road and five on the other; however, two of these five houses are not aligned.”
Some hatching eggs travel over 120 meters on the Vencobelt, passing through a specially designed tunnel that connects the houses and provides complete protection from weather conditions. They cross a bridge that is 4.5 meters high, showing no significant increase in hair cracks.
Biljana Tomić: “We experience much better control over the quality of hatching eggs delivered to our customers and much less labour required on the farm. At times, we questioned whether we could find a way around the design flaws of the farm. Thanks to our partners, who shared their own solutions, along with the invaluable guidance of our breeder expert dr. Ron Meijerhof, we achieved great success!”
